The Visiting Nurse Foundation was created in 1989 as a fundraising arm of the Visiting Nurse Association, a Pittsburgh-based, non-profit organization that set standards for excellent home care, from 1918 until its dissolution in 2000.

The Foundation formed the partnership with the Allegheny County Health Department that became the annual Fight the Flu campaign, now known as FLU B•GONE. The Foundation organizes and administers influenza and pneumonia vaccines at neighborhood sites and businesses.

In 2002, VNF re-established the Stroke Survivor Connection.

On September 29, 2006 VNF became Health Hope Network. Health Hope Network following the VNF's mission leverages the spirit of service that sparked the visiting nurse movement more than 80 years ago to serve the unmet community health needs of residents of Allegheny and surrounding counties. Health Hope Network relies on volunteers from the healthcare field, area corporations and the community at-large to make its programs possible.

Health Hope Network is a 501(c)(3) organization and offers a proven fundraising capability, minimal administrative costs and the ability to deliver certain services at much lower cost than government and independent health insurance providers.

Health Hope Network's services promote community health, access to community resources and sustained independence and community participation for people with medical conditions.
